Grapes of Wrath Movie or Book?

First off, I would like to say that I did not like either of these. But if I would have to choose, I would choose the book because it was a little less dry and easier to understand.

The book and movie have several differences:

The book gives more information, which is part of the reason the movie isn't so dry.  Also, I think we got less information on the time period from the movie, because of the exclusion of the intercalery chapters in the novel.

I guess the main difference was the tone near the end.  The book ends sort of sad, with the still born baby and the dispersion of the Joad family.  In the movie (which is fairly old) I bet they couldn't really show that stuff in this time, so they had to not show those sort of things and end on a better note like them finding the "clean camp" so early.

I think that if the movie stayed more true to the book with more focus on the journey and the farm it would have been a little bit better.  It suprised me, that in this case, I would rather watch the movie than read the book first, so that I could understand the dry nature of the novel better.

  1. I think the movie stayed extremely close to the book, I've never seen a movie that follows the book that well. I liked the movie better because the book put me to sleep

  2. Well, I loved both, but the movie completely changes the ending, and to me, that completely changes the feeling left by the story. It was a much more hopeful movie, I thought. The book had such a gritty vision of hope--much more bitter to take, but yet the hope in such a harsh world made it much more powerful to me. Any thoughts?

  3. I have never read or seen either of these. I haven't heard anything good about either one, but I will try to get around to either reading the book or watching the movie!

  4. I haven't read the book nor seen the movie, but no matter what book or movie that your talking about, the book always seems to be better than the movie because the movies always tend to leave things out.
